Suspension

Features cast iron lower arms designed for durability and cast aluminum steering knuckle to reduce weight, providing a versatile front suspension system strong enough to withstand off-road use, yet delivering a smooth, precise on-road ride.

Concentric coil springs and shock absorbers mounted on the upper control arms reduce noise while front-suspension jounce bumpers reduce harshness and "bottom out" driving over large bumps. Features live axle dual upper and lower trailing arms, track bar, coil springs, stabilizer bar and shock absorbers.

Speed Control

Available speed control precisely regulates vehicle speed to automatically maintain a set speed, offering convenient cruising.

Part-Time Four-Wheel Drive

Part-time system allows the driver to "shift on the fly" into high-range four-wheel drive at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph), offering added traction when desired and improved fuel efficiency when additional traction is not required.

The part-time system provides equal engine torque to both the front and rear drive-shafts, causing them to rotate at the same speed. This system should not be used on dry pavement.

Fuel Tank

Nitro's 74 litre fuel tank provides a long lasting driving range resulting in fewer fill-ups.

Front Axle

Front axle centre section mounts in an aluminum housing designed for use with the independent front suspension, providing greater gear strength when driving in the forward direction, smoother, quieter operation and greater ground clearance to the axle housing.

The axle features an above-centre pinion mounting. The drive-shaft attaches to the axle at the top instead of at the bottom as on previous front axles. The above-centre pinion also reduces the universal joint angle of the front drive-shaft.

Four-Speed Automatic

Four-Speed automatic transmission (with 3/7-litre V6 engine) is standard on SE, SXT and SLT models.

Five-Speed Automatic

The five-speed automatic transmission features Electronic Range Select (ERC) and fully adaptive electronic shift control, adapting the shift schedule to the individual's driving style and road conditions.

Tire Pressure Monitoring

All Nitro models have standard Tire Pressure Monitoring that includes a low pressure warning lamp in the instrument cluster. Tire Pressure Monitoring systems aid owners in maintaining proper tire pressure for safe operation, better fuel economy, reduced tire wear, optimum vehicle handling and ride comfort. A warning message and chime on SLT and R/T immediately announce a low pressure condition in any tire.

SLT and R/T models have a tire pressure display within the Electronic Vehicle Information Centre (EVIC) display showing individual tire pressures.

Side-Curtain Air Bags

The side-curtain air bags are mounted in the headliner above the doors, and a crash sensor is located near the bottom inside of each B-pillar, providing added outboard occupant protection and peace of mind for both rows of seats, Roll-sensing technology feature keeps the air bag inflated longer after deployment in rollover situations, helping provide protection for outboard occupants in the event of a rollover.

Sentry Key®

Prevents the engine from starting when using an invalid or improperly coded key, providing security by making it virtually impossible to start the vehicle without the owner's key.

Anti-lock brakes automatically modulate brake fluid pressure during hard braking, allowing the driver to maneuver with greater stability and control.

Fog Lamps

True fog lamps with high-efficiency halogen bulbs provide excellent road coverage, illuminating the area immediately ahead of the vehicle with a low, wide beam for improved visibility.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP™)

Electronic Stability Program (ESP™) is designed to assist driver in maintaining control of their vehicles during extreme steering maneuvers. ESP senses when a vehicle is starting to spin(over-steer) or plow (under-steer), and attempts to correct the vehicle's course by automatically controlling the throttle and applying the brakes at individual wheels.

Includes Brake Assist, which applies maximum braking power in emergency situations, providing the shortest possible stopping distance.

Includes Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) which anticipates the potential for wheel lift by monitoring the driver's steering wheel input and the speed of the vehicle. When ERM determines that the range of change of the steering wheel angle and vehicle speed are sufficient to potentially cause wheel lift, it applies the appropriate brake and may reduce engine power to lessen the chance that wheel lift will occur. Includes all-speed traction control, which senses drive wheel slip and individually applies brakes to the slipping wheel and/or reduces excess engine power until control is regained. Anti-lock brakes automatically modulate brake fluid pressure during hard braking, allowing the driver to maneuver with greater stability and control.

No system, no matter how sophisticated, can repeal the laws of physics or overcome careless driving actions. Performance is limited by available traction, which snow, ice and other conditions can affect. When the ESP warning lamp in the instrument cluster flashes, the driver needs to use less throttle and adapt speed and driving behaviour to prevailing road conditions. Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Please always wear your seat belt.

Child Seat Anchor System

Lower child seat anchors and upper tether anchors help ease the installation of compatible aftermarket child seats, minimizing the chances of improper installation and significantly improving the overall performance of compatible aftermarket child seats in collisions, while providing added peace of mind.

Brake/Park Interlock

Brake/Park Interlock allows the transmission to be shifted out of Park only when pressure is applied to the brake pedal, preventing accidental engagement of the transmission (automatic transmission).

Advanced Multistage Air Bags

Air bags inflate with a force appropriate to the severity of the impact.
